An estimated three billion refrigeration, airconditioning and heat pump systems are currently in operation worldwide, according to the latest Information Note from the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR).
The 29th IIR Informatory Note examines the role of refrigeration in the global economy and is designed to assist decision-makers worldwide developing policy for this sector.
It presents the application and requirements of refrigeration across the globe and the key role it plays in all areas of the economy.
Based on statistical data, the 29th IIR Informatory Note said annual sales worldwide for refrigeration, airconditioning and heat pump systems has topped $US300 billion.
It also found an estimated 12 million people are employed worldwide in the refrigeration sector while 17 per cent of the overall electricity used globally is consumed by the refrigeration sector.
"The refrigeration industry plays a major role in today’s global economy, with significant contributions made in food, health, energy and environmental domains which policy makers need to take into account," the Note said.
