Noppen Group technician Matthew Hikin is in the second year of his apprenticeship. The 18-year-old likes being part of a good team and says he is surrounded by supportive staff.
For young people new to the workforce and learning new skills, workplace support can be critical in determining completion rates for young apprentices. Sadly, completion rates for apprenticeships in Australia are routinely below 60 per cent.
But for Matthew, he says he works in a great environment and there is always plenty to do. He doesn't mind being on his feet all day and says he likes being able to move around.
"The most challenging part of the job is using the grinder," he says. Asked about the future and Matthew says he plans to remain in this industry right through to retirement.
