The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to prohibit the use of R134a in mobile air conditioning systems from the year 2021.
It would also be extended to stand-alone retail food refrigeration and vending machines from 2016.
The move is part of the EPA's Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program which includes changing the status of certain HFCs with high Global Warming Potential (GWP) in a bid to seek out more climate friendly alternatives.
Under the proposal, other blends that would also be unacceptable for stand-alone refrigeration include R404A, R407C and R-410A from January 1, 2016.
Public feedback is currently being sought and a public hearing will also be held in Washington.
