Perth’s Fiona Stanley Hospital is a new $2 billion hospital being constructed for Western Australia Health.
The development includes a new central energy facility housing the main central cooling, heating and backup power generation plant utilising Trane chillers due to their energy saving benefits.
Construction of the new hospital is by Brookfield Multiplex with the hospital due for completion at the end of 2012. AECOM is the mechanical consultant for the project and the mechanical contractor for the central energy facility is Triple M Mechanical Services (WA).
Dalkia, exclusive distributors of Trane products and systems in Australia and New Zealand, was awarded the contract to supply four Duplex Trane centrifugal chillers, each
with a capacity of 6.8MWr, giving a total refrigerating capacity of 27.2MWr.
In selecting the Trane chillers, the client was placing significant emphasis on energy efficiency, reliability and whole-life total cost of ownership. The Trane chillers selected run on HCFC123 refrigerant, one key benefit is its operation mainly under negative pressure and, in the event of a leak, air enters into the machine minimising refrigerant loss.
The client initially had concerns with the long-term availability of HCFC123 refrigerant, as virgin refrigerant will be unavailable for import into Australia from 2030. However,
any HCFC123 imported before this time is available for use in the market after the import restriction date. Reclaimed refrigerant will also be available for use in the market after this date, as refrigerants from machines that are decommissioned will be stockpiled.
To help ease the client’s concerns, Dalkia and Trane provided a refrigerant guarantee of lifetime availability built around the proven history of near zero refrigerant losses from these chillers.
These CDHG chillers represent the largest single chiller capacity (6.8MW) currently in Australia and New Zealand. All four chillers were factory performance-tested from full load to 10 per cent of full load capacity at an AHRI certified test facility in the USA.
Dalkia Technical Services looks forward to proving the Trane efficiencies, reliability advantages and life cycle cost benefits.
