The NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has coordinated the safe movement of a 17 metre long heat exchanger across land and sea to reach Western Australia within three weeks.
The 141 tonne stainless steel heat exchanger is eight metres high and 6.9 metres wide.
Manufactured by WE Smith Engineering in Coffs Harbour for use in the WA mining industry, theimpressive load is the size of a small lighthouse or grain silo.
It travelled under special permit on a 19 axle truck to the Coffs Harbour wharf where it was placed on a barge and towed from the harbour.
“From Coffs Harbour it travelled south to Port Kembla where it was transferred to a heavy lift ship for its journey to Western Australia,” a RMS spokesperson said.
“Recreational and commercial vessel operators were alerted to the oversize load on marine radio.
“In all, the trip by sea to Western Australia took about 18 days.”
