The Harris Products Group has released a unique, patented brazing flux that is safe for both humans and the environment and features improved metal bonding and colour change technology.

The Eco-Smart Brazing Flux is a new boric acid free alternative to standard fluxes. The need for a formulation without the standard boric acid additive was prompted by European health and safety laws.

In 2006 the European Union issued the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) to address the production and use of chemical substances and their potential impacts on both human health and the environment.

REACH also addresses the continued use of chemical substances of very high concern (SVHC) because of their potential negative impacts on  human health or the environment.

In 2010 the European Chemicals Agency issued a directive listing boric acid as a “Substance of Very High Concern” because of its carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction potential.

This risk assessment was based on studies indicating boric acid exposure contributed to fertility and reproductive issues.  European requirements include registration of chemicals, specific warning labels informing about reproduction toxicity, and requirements for user education.

In addition, the unique green colour of the standard Eco-Smart flux provides a distinct colour change indication that parts are close to brazing temperature.
