TS4 Sustainable Living has taken out the title of winner of Australia’s first zero carbon sustainable house design and build competition, using Ductair’s Energy Smart air delivery system.
TS4 Sustainable Living was one of four finalist teams tasked with designing a zero carbon home, taking into account key elements such as the embodied energy of a building, future emissions, liveability, affordability and adaptability.
TS4 Sustainable Living has now brought its concept of a zero carbon home to life by building its design on Lot 61 at Lochiel Park, a 'green village' being built in Adelaide's Campbelltown.
The Zero Carbon Challenge is a joint competition organised by South Australia's Integrated Design Commission and the Land Management Council, and builds on a tradition of environmental leadership in South Australia to promote clean sustainable technologies.
It does this by harnessing the design intelligence of architects and the experience of South Australian builders who are committed to setting a ‘new norm’ for sustainable living.
When the Integrated Design Commission first spoke with the Land Management Council about a house that achieved zero carbon for materials and operation, the idea was to promote innovation in South Australian housing.
The project has since attracted interest from the federal government, the CSIRO, the Green Building Council and other states.
TS4 says the Zero Carbon Challenge is about finding solutions to a problem shared across the developed world – sustainable housing and sustainable living.
“Adelaide’s urban future needs more sustainable housing,” a company spokesperson said.
“Our 30-year plan puts at the top the need for a more compact and carbon efficient urban form that’s affordable and that engages the community.
“That’s what the Zero Carbon Challenge was all about: a low carbon house that is no more than the median house price, and is desirable.”
Ductair sales manager Reuben Kelley says the air conditioning system was a particular challenge in this project.
“It’s an even bigger challenge with a home like this and that is why TS4 Sustainable Living has specified a Ductair Energy Smart system,” Kelley says.
“Ductair is committed to the preservation of the environment and minimising or reducing adverse environmental impacts of its operations.”
A 100 per cent South Australian owned and operated company, Ductair is a manufacturer and supplier of air conditioning ducting and fittings.
Ductair is a carbon-neutral company, which immediately grabbed the attention of TS4 Sustainable Living.
“Ductair supplied our Energy Smart delivery system, the University of SA tested and proven flexible duct, fittings and zoning, for the Zero Carbon Challenge House in Lochiel Park,” Kelley says.
“The Energy Smart system is the highest tested thermally rated air delivery system with the lowest air leakage available in the market today.
“Ductair continues to grow and sees the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable products as a key vehicle to achieving continued growth.”
