Swarms of ants are invading homes and wreaking havoc on air conditioning units.

Known as "crazy" ants in the United Stats for their "herky-jerky" style of foraging, they first showed up near Houston in 2002.

Originally from Brazil, the ants seek out cavities in walls or air conditioning units.

Although they are less than 1/8 inch long, they reproduce in large numbers, outnumbering the local species of ants by 100 to 1.

Edward LeBrun, a researcher at the University of Texas, told LiveScience, that the ants are causing havoc with computers and other electronic devices.

But the biggest problem is their preference for swarming air conditioners.

In one case alone, the ants quickly spread to 90 out of 150 air-conditioning units in a single apartment building in Waco, Texas, according to pest company The Bug Master.

One of its employees, pest controller, Mike Matthews, said when he opens the units "there are thousands of ants completely filling it up."

He said the apartment building infestation took two months to control.
