Over the last few decades there has been a shift in the construction industry towards modular off-site prefabrication predominantly in the built environment.

Skids are developed in 3D and approved prior to construction.

In recognition of this trend Quantum Engineering Group Pty Ltd (QEG) has extended this to chilled water installations for both industrial and commercial applications since 2016.

Prefabrication of Central Chilled Water plant packages includes chillers, pumps, pipework, sensors, flow-meters, make up water system, chilled water dosing pot, expansion vessel and associated power and control wiring. All that is left on site is the final hydraulic, power and control connections.

The skids are sized to fit within container dimensions to allow regular road transport.

By prebuilding the skid (pictured) for the Archie Rose distillery in Broadmeadow, NSW the company saved both on capital cost and valuable installation time.

Central to QEG’s philosophy is to maximize off site prefabrication to:

  • Minimize works on site: time and cost saving!
  • Maximize quality control: offsite fabrication of plant items under controlled conditions, not affected by weather, and without time pressure. Furthermore, prefabricated plants can be inspected and approved by Client and Consultant well before delivery to site.
  • Accelerate program-Prefabrication occurs whilst the building works progress and long lead time items like the chiller are being manufactured. Once the building is ready for mechanical services installation and the long lead time items are ready for delivery, plug and play items of plant are delivered to site ready for final connections.

Most recently QEG was contracted to supply chilled water skids for several mining projects, two gold mines and a lithium mine. Especially in mining environments the benefits of prefabrication are amplified.

Labor on mining sites is expensive and in most cases the sites are remote which further complicates construction.

QEG worked closely with the Client and its consultants to develop appropriate chilled water packages that align with their requirements.

This skid (also pictured) was subsequently connected to the air cooled chiller prior to delivery to site.

Total capacity is 800 kW and includes Air Cooled chiller with indirect free cooling, 2500 ltr buffer-tank, primary and secondary circuit pumps (both in duty / standby arrangement), heat exchanger, expansion tank, dosing pot, make up water system, MSSB and BMS including all sensors.

It was another successful prefabricated chilled water system that is now operating in a lithium mine in remote WA.

QEG would be delighted to assist you with your project requirements be it commercial or industrial and share the benefits of prefabrication providing cost effective solutions at a superior quality level.
